The History of the Shire of the Shadowlands
Capital of Ansteorra
Compiled by Lord Pædric OMullan

Prologue
This is a concise history of the Shire of the Shadowlands, being a true and factual account of the events, activities, and general goings-on of this fair Shire from its earliest days unto the present time, along with the Shire’s Seneschals and Chroniclers. It has been compiled through careful study of the annals by Lord Pædric OMullan, Chronicler and Historian. Begun on this, the Ides of March, in the Year of our Society XLIII.

Part 1 – The Very Early Years

AS XII (77-78)
The very earliest days of the Shire of the Shadowlands are, appropriately enough, shrouded in the mists of time. According to some records, the Shire was officially founded in September of AS XII. There must have been meetings. At least one, probably more, possibly several. During this time were a name chosen and a slate of officers filled. The Shire device was submitted to the Heralds in November of AS XII, which means the name was submitted at or before that time. But of other details of these very early days, I know not. There are many still living who know more these times than I. It is to be hoped that some will step forward with information to fill these gaps in my knowledge.

Written annals of the Shire of the Shadowlands begin in February of AS XII with the first issue of The Shadow Knows. Therein is mentioned the Shadowlands first organized participation at any event, which was at Elf Stomp in the Barony of Stargate, and the Shire’s participation in the SCA demo at the Texas Renaissance festival. Also detailed in this missive is the story of the first event held in the Shire of the Shadowlands, which was a Newcomers Revel. Although it was expected to be attended only by members of the Shire, newcomers, and a few invitees, many others came as well. Prince Sean MacFlamm and Princess Katherina von Alyssin, first Prince and Princess of the newly formed Principality of Ansteorra, attended and held court. This was on the 21st day of January, in the Year of our Society XII. The event was reportedly a huge success, and from that day forward the Shire of the Shadowlands became famous for the quality of its revels. And in those days was Charles Corwinson the Seneschal of the Shire of the Shadowlands, and Milo O’Shawlin was the Chronicler.

In February of this same year did 16 Ansteorrans travel far to the west to join the Aten Army in war against the kingdom of the West. Fully a quarter of these hailed from the Shadowlands. It was here that the Sable Star first made its presence known, as eight warriors clad alike in golden tabards blazoned with a black star rallied under the Aten Sun banner, and of those eight, three were Shadowlanders, and they were Otto the Merciless, Charles Corwinson, and Godfrey Fosse. Details of this momentous event are found in the April AS XII issue of The Shadow Knows, and corroborated in the memoirs of Lady (now Countess) Tessa of the Gardens. In the “Events that Cometh” section of this same issue are mentioned two Shadowlands events, King’s College/University of Ansteorra to be held in April, and Tax Day Tourney One Month Late in May AS III. The outcome of these events is not known, alas, as the annals fell silent for many months.

AS XIII (78-79)
In February of AS XIII a new Chronicler did publish The Shadow Knows, and that was Alec Ravensquill. It told little of what had gone before, except to say that a plague of finals had descended upon the Shire. Among coming events it mentioned a Newcomer’s Revel, to be held in February, and King’s College of Ansteorra to follow in March, both in the Shadowlands. And again the voice of the Shadowlands fell silent, albeit briefly this time.

In March of that year, Godfrey Fosse advanced to the rank of Laurel, the first peer in the Shadowlands.

In May of AS XIV came a short missive introducing a new Chronicler, Buchwald Flashingquill, and telling of an event just past, and one soon to come. On April 30 the Shire held a New Year’s Eve Revel, marking the passing of the Year of our Society XIII. The SCA year, as all should know, begins on May 1st, which marks the anniversary of the May Day Revel at which the Society began.

AS XIV (79-80)
In June was scheduled a Midsummer Revel in the Shadowlands. Also in June AS XIV did Jonathon deLaufeson, called Macebearer, take the crown as the first sovereign King of the new Kingdom of Ansteorra. It should be noted here that in the final round of the first Ansteorran Crown Tournament Duke Jonathon did defeat Lord Otto the Merciless, of the Shire of the Shadowlands. Lord Otto’s consort that day was Rowen of Camphire, who would go on to later win fame and glory in her own right.

And in August did the Shire hold ANOTHER revel (and did not even bother with a reason).

In September did the Shadowlands hold ANOTHER revel, this one a Newcomers Revel, which forty people attended, including a dozen new to the SCA. Also in the September missive was a report on several heraldic submissions, including the Shire of the Shadowlands device, which was then at the Kingdom level. And in those days did Lord Otto the Merciless succeed his brother Lord Charles as the Shadowlands Seneschal.

In October of AS XIV, The Shadow Knows did publish a Domesday Boke listing 56 members of the Shire. Tragedy struck the Shadowlands that month as LaShan Muhlinghaus, one of the Shire’s newcomers, was found murdered in her home.

Also in October, at an All Hallows Eve Revel, was Buchwald Flashingquill given the first Meritorious Order of the Shire of the Shadowlands (MOSS), apparently for publishing a newsletter for five consecutive months, a feat neither of his predecessors could match. It was said the award would be given at each local event (and if you didn’t notice, they were having a revel almost every month).

And in December of that year, the Shire had a Yule revel.

That January, the Shadowlands hosted King’s College/University of Ansteorra, the third of its kind. In those times King’s College was Shadowlands’ yearly event, not the Kingdom level event it has become. Of course, there was a feast and revel that Saturday night. And Lloyd von Eaker and Joselyn Allyne Reynard were the second to wear the Stellar Crown.

And in February of the same year, there was NO revel.

In March, the Shadowlands held an A&S Faire in conjunction with StageCenter’s production of Richard III.

And on April 31 (a neat trick, if I may say so) the Shire of the Shadowlands held a New Year’s Eve Revel. And so ended the Year of our Society XIV.

AS XV (80-81)
In May of AS XV, the Arms of the Shire of the Shadowlands were officially registered at the Imperium level. Also in May, the Shadowlands hosted the kingdom for Ansteorra’s third Crown tournament. Sir Jan w Orzeldom won that day, and in June, he and Mistress Kemreth Danil became the third pair to reign over Ansteorra.

In September of that year, the Shire held a Newcomer’s Revel. Nearly 60 people attended.

And in October was held an All Hallows Eve Revel, at the Texas Renaissance festival.

And in December was held a Yule Revel. Also in December did the Chronicler, Lord Buchwald Flashingquill, retire, having served long and well in that office. And then Waldre Kenwolf was the Chronicler.

And in January were crowned Sigmund the Wingfooted and Sieglinde Syr, the Fourth King and Queen of Ansteorra.

In February of that year, the Shire of the Shadowlands did host king’s College/University of Ansteorra, and that was the fourth. At King’s College was Anna Czujneja elevated to the order of the laurel, and she was the second peer in the Shire of the Shadowlands.

Thus did another year draw to a close.

Part 2 – The still early, but not quite SO early years

AS XVI (81-82)
On New Year’s Day of AS XVI, the Shadowlands did hold another demo at Oakwood Middle School, in conjunction with their Medieval Fair. And in this month was formed a Swashbucklers Guild, the Fellowship of Errol.

And in June did Mistress Anna Czujneja succeed Lord Otto the Merciless as Seneschal.

In September of that year was held a Newcomer’s Revel and Shadowlands Warlord Tourney, at which Caradoc ap Owain received a MOSS. A week later, at the Tax Day Audit Tourney, Sir Elzasif Ironhand, reigning Queen of Ansteorra (of which she was the fifth) finished second in the tourney, and received the (dubious) title “Defender of Otisburg”.

In November of that year did the Shadowlands host a Dance Workshop, the first of its kind in these lands.

In February of that year, the Shadowlands did host King’s College.

And it was around this time that Lady Waldre Kenwolf stepped down as Chronicler, and Mistress Anna Czujneja stepped down as Seneschal, and Mistress Anna became the Chronicler and Corrinne O’Daugherty became the Seneschal of the Shadowlands.

And in April did the Shadowlands host Tax Day Tourney III, and perform a Demo at the Oakwood Middle school renaissance fair, and so ended AS XVI.

AS XVII (82-83)
Little is known of the early months of AS XVII, but a Summer Revel was held during the summer (a most auspicious time for it). By October, Stiller Teilhaber was the Seneschal and Mistress Anna Czujneja published her last newsletter before stepping down.

And in December, Lady Waldre Kenwolf was the Seneschal, and Gregaoir MagAonguis was the Chronicler.

In February of that year did the Shadowlands again host University of Ansteorra/King’s College, and that was the last University of Ansteorra, before King’s College went on the road.

And on April 31 (still a neat trick) did the Shire hold a New Year’s Eve Revel, and so passed a rather uneventful year.

AS XVIII (83-84)
On May 14-15, in the Year of our society XVIII, did the Shire of the Shadowlands host its first Tournament of the Round Table, to find the most well-rounded fighter in the realm. Master Telbyrn Morningstar and Sir Tarl Mapt tied for that honor. And the rains did fall. A lot.

In August of that year did the Sterregazeres Gylde have an unofficial Sterre Partie at Lake Somerville to coincide with the Perseied meteor shower. Also in August did Lady Waldre Kenwolf step down as Seneschal, and then was Lord Doyel Mor-Ser the Seneschal.

In November did the Shadowlands host the Feast of St. Martin, at which was held the first recorded Title Bard competition for the Bard of the Shadowlands. Alas, no record was made of the winner of this competition.

In February of that year did Lord Gregaoir MagAonguis step down as Chronicler, and the new Chronicler was Lady Rosamond Carmody. And in these days was The Shadow Knows often filled with interesting and learned articles about various and diverse subjects, but little information about the events, revels, and other activities of the Shire.

In April, the Shadowlands scheduled the second Round Table Tourney, but no records of it remain. And so passed another year.

AS XIX (84-85)
In June of this year was Moira the Chronicler.

In October of this year did Falke von Rheinfels receive a White scarf, becoming the first Don in the Shadowlands.

In November of this year was Nichole Alicia Marie du Beaumains the Chronicler.

And in April was Catherine Marie d’Evreux the Chronicler.

Also in April did the Shadowlands host the Round Table Tournament, and this was the third.

And so another year was passed.

Part 3 – The Later Early Years

AS XX (85-86)
In May of AS XX did Lady Jeheane of Winter Hills become the acting Seneschal.

In July of that year, the Shire hosted the Shadowlands Lakeside Eisteddfod, at which was chosen the second Title bard of the Shadowlands, and the winner of that competition was not recorded.

In September was scheduled a Saint Michaelmas event to be hosted by the Shadowlands, but of details there are none.

By October of the same year did Freiherr Falke von Rhienfels become the Seneschal of the Shadowlands. Also in October was held a Halloween party sponsored by the Ladies Sewing and Terrorist Guild.

In December was there a great unrest within the Shadowlands, but that is outside the scope of my work.

And in April of that year did the Shadowlands host the Round Table tournament, and that was the fourth. It was here that the title “Artisan of the Shadowlands” was first awarded. And the winner was Lady (now Mistress) Alisandre Oliphant. And it was she who designed and registered the badge for the Artisan of the Shadowlands. Thus did another year end.

AS XXI (86-87)
In June of the new year, AS XXI, did Lord Albrek Ice Axe become the Seneschal of the Shadowlands.

In July of that year did HL Jeheane McRobb become Chronicler.

In August did the Shadowlands, in conjunction with Stargate, host Elfstomp and Eisteddfod, and a new Bard of the Shadowlands was chosen, and that was Rebekah. Here the record fell silent for a time.

In February of that year, the Shadowlands hosted a return visit of King’s College. This have I verified from other sources.

And sometime in this period was held the fifth tournament of the Round Table, to which I found passing reference in later annals. And Mistress Alisandre defended her title as Artisan of the Shadowlands. And so ended the year AS XXI.

AS XXII (87-88)
In August of the new year did the Shadowlands host the second Eisteddstomp. Presumably a new Bard of the Shadowlands was chosen, but no record remains.

In September was there a Newcomer’s Revel.

Also in September did the Shadowlands host another King’s College.

In October did Lady Antoinette Louise become the Shadowlands Chronicler.

In January was there a Twelfth Night Feast and Revel. And the year AS XXII did draw to a close.

AS XXIII (88-89)
In June of the new year, the Shadowlands hosted the Roundtable Tournament, and that was the sixth of them.

In September of that year did HL Doyel Mor-Ser return to the office of Seneschal, and he was the only one to hold that office twice.

In December, the Shire hosted the Kingdom Heraldic Symposium.

In January, Fiacra MacMunna became the new Shire Chronicler.

In February of that same year, the Shadowlands hosted the Kingdom Dance Workshop.

And it was around this time that I, Lord Pædric OMullan, first came to the Knowne Worlde, and the Shire of the Shadowlands. And the old year passed.

Part 4 – The Early Middle Years

AS XXIV (89-90)
In May of AS XXIV, the Shadowlands hosted Roundtable Tournament for the seventh time, and there is no record of the outcome. And this was my first event.

That summer did Lady Realtatana Faol, who was commonly called Starwolf, serve as the temporary Chronicler, until Fiacra returned.

The 21st King and Queen of Ansteorra were Patrick Michael Gordonne and Julia de Montoya.

In July of that year did the Shire of the Shadowlands host the Tournament of the Queen’s Champion, and that was the first time we hosted it.

And the winner was Don Galen Nicolli.

In September, the Shire did hold a Newcomer’s Revel, and the next day did host its Tenth Year Celebration, for in those days they were reckoning the anniversary, not from the date the Shire was first founded, but from the date the Shire achieved full and official Shire status.

It was here that King Patrick Michael was murdered by a careless assassin, who sought to deprive Lord Kiyama Akaji of life, and succeeded. King Patrick Michael was an unforeseen complication. And it was one Antoine who did this foul and dastardly deed, as I saw with my own eyes. Fortunately, Queen Julia was able to revive both with a kiss.

That night at court Lord Kiyama became the first ever to receive a new award, the Award of the Queen’s Rapier (AQR). Duchess Rowen Beatrice von Kampfir, a former denizen of the Shadowlands, won the Chivalric list, and the Queen’s Champion, Don Galen Nicolli, won the Rapier list. Lady Corinne O’Daugherty that day became the Artisan of the Shadowlands, and Lady Karina des Penses became the Bard of the Shadowlands. Fiacra, now a Lord, returned as Chronicler that month. And Lady Sorka ni Faolan, who was the same Starwolf with a new name, became the Seneschal of the Shadowlands.

In January, the Shire held a Yule Revel one Month Late, and many of the ladies did dye their hair red for Earnan.

In March of that same year, the Shadowlands did host the 8th Round Table Tournament. Duchess Rowen Beatrice von Kampfir won the chivalric list and overall Championship, and Don Christian Richard Dupre won the rapier list. Lord David the Smith became the Artisan of the Shadowlands and Lord Robyn Solarius became the Bard of the Shadowlands. Lady Rhiannon o Goed Niwlog won the heraldry competition, Lord Siegfried von der Waldet Bergen won the games, and Lord Amos MacAlpin won the dance competition. And the Chronicler became Lord Geoffrey Charles Scrymger, for that was Fiacra MacMunna’s new name. And so did the year end.

AS XXV (90-91)
In June of the new year, the Shire held an Otisburg Revival Festival at Loch Otismere.

Also in June did Lord Caradoc ap Owain become the new Chronicler.

In July of that year did the Shadowlands host the Kingdom Heraldic Symposium, and that was the second time.

In that same month did Patrick Michael II and Julia II become the 23rd pair to wear the Sable Crown.

In August of that year, by command of Queen Julia, the Shadowlands did host another Queen’s Champion Tourney, which was the second of these we hosted.

In September, the Shire did hold a Newcomers Revel.

In January of the same year did the Shadowlands hold a Twelfth Candle Revel.

Also in January did Duchess Rowen Beatrice von Kampfir, former Shadowlander and reigning Champion of the Round Table, become the Known World’s first Queen BY RIGHT OF ARMS.

In April, the Shadowlands hosted the Tournament of the Dining Room Table, which was an April Fool’s joke, and it was really the 9th Tournament of the Round Table. It was here that Gaspard du Lac received a White Scarf, and became the second Don from the Shadowlands. And this was the last event I attended for some years. Thus ended AS XXV.

AS XXVI (91-92)
By August of AS XXVI, HL Sorcha had stepped down as Seneschal and returned as Chronicler. And Lord Amos MacAlpin then was the Seneschal.

That September, the Shire did hold a Newcomers Revel, followed the next day by a Newcomer’s Day Trip to Defender of the Fort in Raven’s Fort.

In January of that same year, the Shadowlands did host the coronation of their Majesties Patrick Michael III and Julia III, and they were the 26th to take the Stellar Throne.

Also in January did Lady Renate Johanna Wilhelmina Warnecke become the new Chronicler.

In February, the Shire did hold a Twelfth Candle Revel.

In April, the Shadowlands did host the Tournament of the Round Table X. The winner of the chivalric list and Defender of the Roundtable was Richard de Chinon. The winner of the rapier list was Don Tivar Moondragon. Lord Amos MacAlpin won the archery list, and David van den Storm the heraldry competition. The games competition was won by Cedric the Starcrossed and the dance competition by Corinne Elizabeth Drake and Valentyn Drake. Jalali of Salamis won the bardic competition and became the Bard of the Shadowlands. Lord Jin Liu Ch’ang won the A&S competition and became the Artisan of the Shadowlands. And the year drew to a close.

AS XXVII (92-93)
In June of the new year did the forces of Ansteorra march east to war against the army of Trimaris. And this was rather unimaginatively called “The War Against Trimaris” , but would later come to be called Gulf War. By September AS XXVII Lord Geoffrey Charles Scrymger was the Seneschal of the Shadowlands. In September the Shire held a Newcomer’s Revel, followed the next day by a Newcomer’s Day Trip to Defenders of the Fort in Raven’s Fort.

In October, the Shadowlands hosted its 15th Year Celebration, and this was reckoned from the date the Shire was founded.

And the annals fell silent for many months.

Sometime in here was held the Tournament of the Round Table XI, but no record of it was made.

Eventually the year ended.

Part 5 – The Later Middle Years

AS XXVIII (93-94)
By September of the new year, was Lord Tosti Liefson the Seneschal and Wolfgang von Hammer the Chronicler. That month was held a newcomer’s Event and tourney, in conjunction with the populace meeting. And lord Ulstead the Unsteady won the tourney.

In October was held another all-day mini-event/populace meeting, and then again in November.

That December, the Shire participated in the Bryan/College Station Christmas Parade, with a float and dancers.

In February, the mini-tourney/populace meeting was a Tourney of Love and Beauty.

In March, Lord Ulstead the Unsteady became the Seneschal of the Shadowlands, and the March mini-tourney/ populace meeting was the Ulstead and Ulrick Invitational, a quest.

In April, the theme of the mini-tourney was silly. And the April Domesday listed 62 members. Thus did another year draw to a close.

AS XXIX (94-95)
In May of the new year was scheduled a mini-tourney/populace meeting with the theme of Highland Games, but so few people attended it was called a regular fighter practice instead.

In June was held another mini-tourney/populace meeting, and that was better attended. And in these days was there a problem of factionalism within the Shire, but that is still beyond the scope of this work.

In July of that year, the Shadowlands hosted Elfstomp, the Return of the Poobah.

In September of the same year was held a Newcomer’s Revel, which was attended by the Queen. And in this month populace meetings moved back to campus, but the off-campus mini-tourneys would continue.

In October was held a Machiavellian Mini-tourney, and a Halloween Masquerade Ball.

In November of that year was held A Day at the Faire Mini-Tourney.

In January was held a Newcomer’s Revel, and Ryan Bishop became the new Chronicler.

In March of that year, the Shadowlands hosted the 12th Tournament of the Round Table, and the winners were as follows: Chivalric, Dance, and Champion of the Round Table – Sir Rhodri ap Gwythyr, A&S – HL Caitlin(sic) McKenna, Rapier – Lord Christoforo, Heraldry – Enoch Crandall MacCranon, Bardic – Andre Duvaule, Games – Anna of Stargate, Archery – Douglas Starwolf.

In April was held a Spring Picnic and mini-tourney. So ended the year AS XXIX.

AS XXX (95-96)
By September of the Year AS XXX, the Shire had a new temporary Seneschal, Lady Crystal Anne Berringer, and a new temporary Chronicler, Esther Anne Wright.

In that same month, the Shadowlands hosted another Elfstomp.

By that February, the Seneschal was HL Meghann MacGuire, and the Chronicler was Katherine de Vena. And another year was done.

AS XXXI (96-97)
In July of the new year, lady Kiera McFlannchaidh became the Seneschal of the Shadowlands, and Camera published one issue of The Shadow Knows while Katherine de Vena was out of town.

In September, the Shire held a Newcomer’s Revel, and it was at this time that I returned to the Shadowlands, and I have been here ever since.

In November of that year, the Shadowlands hosted the Tournament of the Round Table, and that was the thirteenth. Timo Krinidious won the Heraldry competition, as well as Champion of the Round Table. Lady Crystal won the Bardic and Archery competitions. Lady Esther Anne Wright the A&S competition, and Tristan won the Games. Lord Randall won the Chivalric list and Lord Staltus won the Rapier list. The dance competition was won by Lord Christoforo Antonio Passavanti. And it was a dark and stormy night.

In February of the same year, the Shadowlands hosted King’s College, its first in many years. So ended the year AS XXXI.

Part 6 – The Early Recent Years

AS XXXII (97-98)
In May of AS XXXII did Alexandra of the Shadowlands become the new Seneschal of the Shadowlands.

In September Pædric OMullan (hey, that’s me) became the Chronicler.

In that same month the Shire of the Shadowlands hosted its 20th Year Celebration. Lord Timothius Kranisius(sic) won the Chivalric list and Don Brendan won the Rapier list. Lady Isobel Grace Hadley won the A&S competition and became the Artisan of the Shadowlands. Baroness Catherine Sommerfield and Leonardo Acquistapace together won the Bardic competition with a performance from Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, and became co-Bards of the Shadowlands.

That month the Shire also put on a demo at the St. Joseph’s Hospital employee picnic.

In the November Domesday were listed 33 members of the Shire.

In March of that same year HL Jin Liu Chiang received a laurel at Crown Tournament in Raven’s Fort, and he was the third to become a Laurel in the Shire (but the first in many years).

So ended another year.

AS XXXIII (98-99)
In May of the new year did Lord Krag von Berghen take over as Seneschal.

Also in May did Jilleighanne of Lindisfarne and Pædric OMullan receive their Awards of Arms from their Majesties Richard II and Gladwen, and this was at Squires and Cadets in Raven’s Fort. [This may not seem like important Shire history to you, the reader, but it mattered to me, and I’m writing the history. ED.]

In September of that year, the Shadowlands hosted a Harvest Festival and Boar Hunt, which was won by Sir Wilhelm (as the boar). Lord Valentyn won the Rapier list, and Centurion Timo won the archery list. Sir Kief av Kierstad won the Bardic competition and became Bard of the Shadowlands. HL Reisa won the A&S competition, and became Artisan of the Shadowlands. Lady Esther Anne Wright received a MOSS that day.

And this was the first year (that I know of) the Shadowlands did a full-scale Demo on the Drill Field for TAMU’s Open House.

That same month was held a Newcomer’s Revel and Newcomers Day Trip to Defenders of the Fort in Raven’s Fort.

In October, the Shadowlands co-hosted, With Raven’s Fort, a weekend at Texas Renaissance Festival. Almost half the Shire attended. Saturday was nice, Sunday was the only day the Renaissance Festival has ever been closed due to rain.

In November, the Shire put on a Demo for St. Michael’s Academy’s Fall Harvest Faire. It rained there too.

And in February, the Shire did a small demo for COFLO (whatever that is).

In March of that same year, the Shadowlands did a demo and panel discussion for AggieCon.

In April of that year, the Shadowlands hosted Barbarian Roguefest I, and that was the first of these. Evets von der Drachen was the Chivalric champion, and Don Ansgar von Aachen was the rapier champion. Lady Abigail Pinel was the A&S champion, and Jara of the Stuarts was the Bardic champion. HL Brion duVal was the Champion of Rogues.

So passed the year AS XXXIII.

AS XXXIV (99-00)
In July of the new year did Victor duFresne become the Seneschal of the Shadowlands.

In August, many members of the Shadowlands did attend Ansteorra’s 20th Year celebration.

In September, the Shire did an Open House Demo at the Regent’s Fountain in the MSC.

There was no Newcomer’s Revel that year, but there were two Newcomer’s trips, to Stargate and Raven’s Fort.

In October of that year did Melissa of the Shadowlands become the Shadowlands Chronicler.

In November of that year, the Shadowlands once more co-hosted a weekend at Texas Renaissance Festival with the Barony of Raven’s Fort.

In April of that year did the Shadowlands host Roguefest II, at which Baron Ulstead the Unsteady was declared the Champion of Rogues. Lord Pædric OMullan won the Bardic competition, but that year it was not for the title Bard of the Shadowlands.

So ended another year.

Part 7 – A few Years Ago

AS XXXV (00-01)
It was around this time that the Shire of the Shadowlands entered the Information Age, as The Shadow Knows began to be published on the internet. Ironically, this led to a reduction in the amount of historical information included. What follows comes in part from the online newsletter, in part from the Shire list archives, and in part from my own, sometimes faulty, memory.

In September of AS XXXV did the Shire hold an Open House demo on the drill field.

Also in this month, many members of the Shire did take a Newcomers Trip to Defender of the Fort in Raven’s Fort.

In October the Shadowlands did co-host a weekend at Texas Renaissance Festival with Raven’s Fort.

In December, the Shire entered a float in the Bryan/College Station Holiday Parade.

And another year ended.

AS XXXVI (01-02)
In August of the new year, the Shire did hold an A&S Collegium, but it was not on the Kingdom calendar.

In that same month, Lord Diego Quintana became the Seneschal of the Shadowlands, and Master Jin Liu Chiang became the Chronicler.

In September, the Shire held an Open House demo, this one at the Regent’s Fountain at the MSC.

And again, many members of the Shire took a Newcomers Trip to Defender of the Fort in Raven’s Fort.

In November of that same year, the Shadowlands did host the Kingdom A&S competition. The following day King Duncan and his herald did participate in the SCA demo at the Texas Renaissance Festival, where Lady Katla Olafsdottir and Lord Rabert Stewart, both of the Shadowlands, became the first and only people ever to receive their AoAs by the hand of the King in open court at TRF. (They had been read into law the previous day.)

So ended the year AS XXXVI.

AS XXXVII (02-03)
In August of this year did the Shadowlands host our 25th Year Celebration.

In September, the Shire did hold an Open House Demo on the Drill field, followed once more by a Newcomers trip to Defender of the Fort in Raven’s Fort.

In October and November, many from the Shire did participate in the SCA demo at Texas Renaissance Festival, and, alas, this was the last time, as the SCA’s holdings at TRF were seized by King George (the owner of TRF.)

In March of the same year, the Shadowlands did host Roguefest III. No record was published of the results, but it is known that Lord Pædric OMullan won the title Artisan of the Shadowlands, and Lord Madog of Glastonbury became Bard of the Shadowlands.

And another year was passed.

AS XXXVIII (03-04)
By September of the new year, Lord Thomas O’Toole had become the Seneschal of the Shadowlands, and Lady Abigail Pinel was the Chronicler.

In September, the Shire once again held an Open House demo on the Drill Field, followed by a Newcomers Trip to defender of the Fort in Raven’s Fort.

In April did the Shadowlands host a Shadowlands Champions event, at which it is believed Mistress Clara von Ulm became Artisan of the Shadowlands, and Lord Alden Drake was named Bard of the Shadowlands but no results were published.

Thus ended the year AS XXXVIII.

AS XXXIX(04-05)
In September, the Shadowlands held an Open House Demo on the list field, followed once more by a Newcomers trip Defender of the Fort in Raven’s Fort. In April of that same year, the Shire hosted another Shadowlands Champions event, at which Mistress Clara von Ulm defended her title as Artisan, but no other results are known.

So passed another year.

Part 8 – The Last Few Years

AS XL (05-06)
In July of the new year, the Shadowlands co-hosted the Kingdom for the Coronation of Jason II & Sereide II, along with the Shire of Emerald Keep.

In September the Shire once more held an Open House Demo on the Drill Field, followed by a Newcomer’s Trip to defender of the Fort in Raven’s Fort.

In November of that same year did the Shadowlands co-host the first Defenders of the Rose Tournament, again with Emerald Keep.

In February of that year did Lord Bastian Eisengart Become the Seneschal of the Shadowlands.

And another year ended.

AS XLI (06-07)
In September of this year, the Shire once more held an Open House Demo on the Drill Field.

In October did the Shire take a Newcomer’s trip to Drachenstitch in Gate’s Edge.

In November of that year, the Shadowlands did co-host Defenders of the Rose II, again with Emerald Keep.

And the year ended.

AS XLII (07-08)
By June of the new year, Elizabeth Somerset was the Chronicler of the Shadowlands.

In July, the Shadowlands hosted the King's Round Table Meeting.

In September of that year, the Shadowlands celebrated its 30th Anniversary with Third Tenth Year.

Also in September, the Shire held an Open House Demo on the Drill Field.

In November, the Shire co-hosted Defenders of the Rose III, once more with Emerald Keep.

And it was around this time that Juan Francisco Aranzazu Ramirez became the Seneschal of the Shadowlands.

In April of that same year, the Shadowlands hosted an overnight lock-in event called Seige the Day.

So ended another year.

AS XLIII (08-09)
In September of the new year, the Shire of the Shadowlands was proclaimed to be the Capital of Ansteorra by his Majesty, King Ulstead IV, as Lord Bastian Eisengart and Sir Rhodri ap Gwythyr received Sable Comets which read, in part, “…in recognition of especial endeavors of service to our Shire of the Shadowlands, Capital of Ansteorra…”.

Also in September, the Shire once more held an Open House Demo on the Drill Field, but the Newcomer’s Trip to Defender of the Fort in Raven’s fort was cancelled due to Hurricane Ike.

In November, many members from the Shadowlands participated in a demo for Candlelighters.

In January of that same year, the Shadowlands held the Fall Ball in the Small Hall.

In February the Shire finally (after 32 years) designed a Shire Achievement of Arms.

In March did Lord Pædric OMullan return as Chronicler of the Shadowlands, and he was the first to fulfill a two year warrant in that office and come back for more.

In April of that same year, the Shadowlands co-hosted Defenders of the Rose IV, this time with the Shire of Tir Medoin.

Thus ended the year AS XLIII.

AS XLIV (09-10)
In June of the new year did the Shire put on a demo at Larry Ringer Library in College Station, in conjunction with the library’s summer reading program.

In July, the Shire hosted a Tournament of Champions, to determine the Champion of Champions at Ansteorra’s xXx Celebration, and did enter Duke Ulstead the Unsteady, a former Shadowlander, as their own champion. Alas, he fell in honorable combat to Centurian Lochlan Dunn, the Champion of Elfsea, who became the Champion of Champions.

Epilogue
This concludes the History of the Shire of the Shadowlands, from its earliest days until the present time, compiled by the hand of Lord Pædric OMullan, a labor which has spanned three months and more. It is done, it is done, and thank God, it is finally done!
