The tile pattern on the cover is a 13th century roman inlaid marble
pavement. It was obtained from Archibald H. Christie, Pattern Design,
Dover Publications, 1969, originally published as Traditional Methods of
Pattern Designing, Clarendon Press, 1910. The plane symmetry of the
design is p6m. The design has a 6-fold reflection axis coming out
of the plane with mirror reflections at 60 degree angles in the plane of
the paper. The chronicler hopes to put his mundane training in crystallinity
to use giving the history of symmetry as it relates tiles, wall decorations,
etc.
