Officer Reports

From the Seneschal

Greetings from your friendly neighborhood Seneschal;
The month of September is upon us, and so to is a flurry of activities. We have a Demo, an Event, and lots of insidiously fun activities brewing on all fronts. With so much on our plates, everybody should get to taste something they like. (Can you tell I'm hungry?)

A few points of business;
Populace Meetings will be moving to the First Thursday of the month at 7:30. They will still be held at the Memorial Student Union on TAMU campus in the 2nd floor lounge, unless otherwise announced. If you would like an activity to appear on the official Shadowlands Calendar, making it an official SCA activity, you need to send a request to the Chronicler (, the Web-mistress (, the officer in charge of such activities (if it isn't you), and the seneschal, i.e. me ( It goes to the first two contacts to ensure it gets published. It goes to the second two contacts to ensure it is approved. Include in the request the times, days, location and nature of activities. All requests for a month need to be submitted by the first Friday of the month.

Archery will be starting in the Shadowlands. Watch next months calendar and the list serve for dates and times of our first new archery practice.

We have a complete set of main officers; congratulations, not every shire can boast that.

Finally, my time as Seneschal is drawing to a close. The office will be open for applications come November, and will most likely close by the end of December. Barring extenuating circumstances, my last day will be around January 19th. To that end, I need a replacement; we can't have a shire without one. The job entails serving as the legal representative of the shire, ensuring that we are compliant with all the rules of society, helping to keep the shire running smoothly, filling in for any vacant positions, and paperwork. You will need to complete the Seneschal's warranting class, as well as the first part of the treasurer's warranting class, either before or very soon after getting the job. The best way to find out if you're interested is to become my deputy. You'll get to see the job from the inside, learn how it works, and have a definite advantage if you decide to apply. Interested parties need only contact me.

From the Chronicler

Please continue to send in reports and articles for inclusion in The Shadow Knows. If you have anything you would like published, please let me know; I have yet to turn down a submission.

Thanks to Lady Caitlín for this month's heraldic color by numbers cover art.

Greetings Shadowlanders!

Has some recent slight upon your honor given you cause to make an appointment of great import? Do you fear becoming set upon by thieves and brigands during your early morning trek home from the tavern? Come learn to defend your life, your property, and the virtues of your lord or lady with your sword as we practice at 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays outside the varsity tennis courts on west campus.

Are you not able to get away from your overbearing responsibilities on Thursday evenings? Come join us on first and third Sundays, beginning in September. Bring your best shirt and doublet for the MSC Open House demonstration on September 2nd at Simpson Drill field (setup begins at 11:00 a.m.), or join us at Oaks Park on Sunday, September 16th at 4:00 p.m. Gate's Edge will also be hosting a multi-regional fighter practice at Camp Camwood on Sunday, August 26th, following their Caribee event.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a deputy rapier marshal, please let me know.

For those melee enthusiasts interested in contending for the Ansteorran Iron Star, we will be devoting an hour of practice to melees when ever we have enough participants present. See the detail's in Don Avery Shaw's message included below.

May your point always strike upon its mark!

Greetings unto the Rapier fighters of Ansteorra!

Below are the initial rules for the Contesting of the Ansteorran Iron Star. The AIS is a continuous tourney pitting melee teams from across the kingdom against one another in a series of fights to determine who is the best of the best on the melee field. If you have questions, please feel free to email me and I will do my best.

Rules for the Ansteorran Iron Star:

1) Teams are between 3-5 people. A maximum of 2 WS allowed per team. Team sizes do not have to match on the field.

2) The current holders are required to be available to defend the Star at least once every 6 weeks, unless there are no events available in that time (ie. December is pretty light in events)

3) Weapon style will be agreed on by the teams, but Heavy Rapier is preferred.

4) When defending, the current holders will be available to fight a minimum of 3 challengers. If less show up, that is fine, but if more, it is up to holders to decide how many they wish to face. Challenges will be on first come, first fight basis.

5) The format for the challenges is up to the teams. If the Holders wish to fight all the challengers one after another, they are welcome to do so. If the challengers want to fight each other and then the top team takes on the holders, that is fine as well. It is requested that all teams be reasonable in this discussion. To quote Don Benedict, "Don't be a dumb*ss". ;)

6) If current holders are unable to be available for challenges within the 6 week span, the Star is to be sent to an event and all Challengers can vie for it. Winner of that day is the new holder.

7) In order to defend, a majority of the original team must fight (2 if the team was 3-4 man, 3 if a 5 man team). Recruiting of replacements is allowed, but the new team cannot be larger than the original team. (ie. A 3 man team wins, one person cannot be at the next defense, they can recruit one replacement only. If it is a 5 man team, and 2 do not show, they can recruit to get back to 5 people). A team may go on the field with less than the original team, but a minimum of 3 fighters are required to be a "team".

8) If a team loses enough people and cannot recruit to get back to 3 fighters, then it is treated as if they were unable to defend, the Star is thrown open and all can vie for possession. The remaining members may now recruit others and form a new team.

The initial contesting of the right to hold the Iron Star will be the Saturday, Sept. 15the at Monshadowe Triumphe. We will be using the field after the Armored Tourney, so we should be starting between 1 and 3 in the afternoon. Have your teams ready and be ready to prove you are the best in the Kingdom!

In service,
Don Avery Shaw

Fellow Shadowlanders,

Rapier fighter practice will continue on Thursdays at 7:00 PM outside the varsity tennis courts on west campus for the rest of September. Beginning in October, there will be no fighter practice on the first Thursday of each month so that we can all attend the populace meeting. There will be a Sunday fighter practice on October 7th at 4:00 PM near the pavilion at Oaks Park on Harvey Road across from Ozona. Look for a future announcement containing details for the multi-regional fighter practice we will be hosting on Sunday, October 21st.

Come sharpen your skills upon the practice field!

Greetings to the Shire,

I just wanted to give you an update on the status of the Shire's web site. I have gone through all the pages looking to consistency and content and made many changes. If there is anything that the populace feels should be added, I would be happy to do it. If there are any groups or guilds that have regular (or irregular) meetings, just let me know and I will post them on our calendar. Also, whenever a group or guild changes meeting times or places, please let me know so that I can update the web site.

If you need to contact me about the web site, please use the address and not my Yahoo! account. This will allow me to pass on all relevant e-mails to the next Virtual Scribe.

Thank you.
